Can Granite Be Scratched?

Considering knives in ancient times were MADE of stone, that gives us some idea of the incredible strength and durability of granite. Stone is usually stronger than metals – think of diamonds, the hardest substance known to man (well, until recently, when also-carbon-based Lonsdaleite was discovered to be stronger).

In general granite is VERY difficult to scratch. Granite is one of the hardest stones in the world and is highly resistant to scratching in ordinary use. A knife blade will not scratch granite. Conversely, only cut directly on your granite countertop if you want to ruin your good knives! Granite is harder than your knife blades and will dull them very quickly if you use the countertop as a cutting surface. Always cut and chop on a wooden or plastic cutting board.

However, granite is like Superman – it does have its kryptonite. It can be scratched by another piece of granite or with specially sharpened tools designed to work with granite, like tungsten and diamond blades.

If you’ve managed to get a scratch in your granite countertop, give us a call at 801 856 0164. Stone & Surface Specialists are second to none in our ability to restore your gorgeous granite, using specialist tools and a lot of hard-earned specialist know-how.
