Is Glass A Stone?

Okay, so I’ve had a few questions about this – ‘I thought Stone Surface Specialists only worked with stone – glass isn’t really a stone.’

Well. Since this is such a giant bone of contention, I should probably address the issue head-on, rather than allow it to fester. Don’t want to be the cause of unrest amongst stone devotees….

So, what exactly IS glass? According to the all-wise Wikipedia, glass is ‘a hard, brittle substance, typically transparent or translucent, made by fusing sand with soda, lime, and sometimes other ingredients and cooling rapidly.’ When you consider that granite is made of a combination of different minerals – mica, quartz and feldspar – and concrete is made of sand, rock and cement (fancy ground-up rock powder), glass starts to sound suspiciously like a stone too. All stones started out life as something else, a combination of trace minerals and ground-up bits of other materials; so really, no stone is really a stone in its own right.

But I digress into the realms of philosophitude. The point is, from where I stand, glass is a type of stone. A gorgeous, glossy, glowing stone that should be kept in tip-top condition with regular professional washings.

I trust that the issue has now been settled once and for all time. To schedule your glass-glossing treatment (aka window-cleaning), call Stone Surface Specialists today at 801 856 0164.
