Is Polishing Acid-Stained Concrete Possible?

Yes, acid stained concrete can be polished. Acid-staining is a permanent change to your concrete so even the grinding involved in polishing will not remove the color. Hooray!

Keep in mind, however, that a deep grind may remove some of the stain because while the color of acid stain penetrates consistently, it does not penetrate through the entire thickness of the concrete slab – it sinks through and lodges in a section of the surface.

So while grinding will not cause your acid-stained finish’s vividness to fade, if you grind down enough material you will eventually reach the part of the concrete that the acid-stain did not reach. Ideally, have your concrete polished down in advance to more or less the smoothness you’d like, then acid-stain it, and finish with a nice polish grind. This will ensure you lose as little concrete material to the polish grind as possible.
